A Beach by Any Other Color

Here in Hawaii, we have walked on white sand, beige sand and sand as black as coal. But the sand that is by far the most interesting is green. Fargo got a real kick out of it too.

In front of surging waves he kicked off his boots and went hoping in the sand just like a little tadpole.

To get to this hidden treasure, we hiked a round trip of six miles along an uninhabited, isolated stretch of the southern most coast line on the island. Naturally we stopped to say "Cheese" and capture a Kodak (actually Fuji) moment at the southern most point in the USA.

Waterworld

Another beach definitely worth mentioning is in Waipio Valley. For all you movie-goers, you may have seen this place. Kevin Costner found land here in the final scene of Waterworld.

Although movie cameras have the ability to alter and enhance any picture; here, what you see is what you get. A gorgeous isolated beach, wedged in a valley between giant cliffs.

We hiked a 25% inclined hill from the lookout to reach the beach (ouch!), then pitched our tents on the black sand. We took pictures of the Passion Fruit and the grasshoppers which danced everywhere on them. In the evening we watched the waves roll toward us and crash against the lava rocks that jutted into the water. The surf they created stretched far down the beach. I commented to John, that the big surf seemed to come in waves. Not even a chuckle. As the Sunset behind the clouds we crawled into our tent and said good night to a beautiful day.
